About This Job

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), working under the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, has advertised one of the most senior technical leadership posts in the federal government: Chief Statistician, offered in Special Professional Pay Scale-II. A single position is open, and whoever is selected will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau. PBS is the country's main official agency for collecting, compiling and publishing statistical information, the numbers that policy makers, planners and researchers depend on for everything from national income accounts to the census. The vacancy was announced through the Planning Commission's careers page and the PBS jobs page, making it a rare opening for a highly experienced statistician or economist who wants to shape how Pakistan measures its economy and population. The Chief Statistician will decide how statistical data is collected and published, supervise the national census through the provincial census commissioners, appraise the quality of statistics nationwide, coordinate with other statistical bodies, build research capacity, prepare annual and five-year work plans and budgets, and set national statistical standards in line with international practice.

Candidates need a Masters or a more advanced degree, with a PhD in a relevant subject such as Statistics or Economics preferred, ideally from a leading international university recognised by the Higher Education Commission. The experience bar is high: at least twenty years of professional work, of which a minimum of five years must have been in a senior management position in a large and significant organisation. The Bureau is looking for someone who has managed large databases and national statistical surveys, compiled and analysed national income accounts and economic statistics, and has a proven leadership and research record on national and international social and economic issues, including statistical analysis feeding into policy. Comfort with computer-based data analysis and advanced statistical software is also expected. Applicants must be no older than 60 on the closing date. The appointment is for a five-year term, with the possibility of re-appointment through a competitive process subject to satisfactory performance, and the holder will leave office at the end of the term or on reaching 65, whichever comes first. The post is open to men and women from all domiciles.

Applications are made by post only. Download the prescribed application proforma from the Planning Commission or PBS website, complete every section including the detailed experience tables against each advertised criterion, and send it with your CV, testimonials, degrees, experience certificates and details of any additional qualifications to the Joint Secretary (PBS), Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Room No. 218, 2nd Floor, P-Block, Pak Secretariat, Islamabad. Serving government employees must route their applications through proper channel. The advertisement allows 15 days from publication, and the official listing gives 26 October 2026 as the closing date, so post your application early enough to arrive in time. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for interview, no TA/DA will be paid, and PBS may choose not to fill the post. If you have spent two decades building statistical systems and want to lead the national statistics agency, prepare your documents now.
