About This Job

The University of the Punjab (PU), Lahore's premier public-sector university, is inviting applications from Pakistani nationals for a Ph.D. Studentship position under an HEC-funded National Research Programme for Universities (NRPU) project at its School of Chemistry. The project, titled "Flow Controlled Capacitive Deionization of Rare Earth Elements from Carbonatite-Monazite Ores Leach Liquor using 2D-Materials Based Electrodes" (HEC-funded NRPU (Call 2025-2026), Project No. 20-194569-29/NRPU/R&ID/HEC/2026 dated 26-03-2026), is being carried out at the School of Chemistry and involves the modification of electrodes using polymeric materials for the capacitive deionization of metal ions, with a specific focus on recovering rare earth elements from carbonatite-monazite ore leach liquor using two-dimensional-materials-based electrodes. One Ph.D. studentship is available under this project, and the engagement will run for two years, with a fixed monthly salary paid subject to the availability of project funds - a common arrangement for HEC-funded research studentships at Pakistani universities, where the stipend supports a student who is simultaneously enrolled in a postgraduate research degree.

Applicants must be enrolled (or eligible for enrolment) in the Ph.D. Program in the School of Chemistry or another relevant department at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, and must have knowledge of the physical chemistry of electrode processes, catalysis, adsorption, and capacitive deionization, since the studentship is tied directly to hands-on laboratory work on this specific research theme rather than being a general teaching post. As a project-based research studentship rather than a regular faculty appointment, there is no separate age limit, domicile restriction, or gender quota specified in the notice, and the position is open to interested and qualified students already part of, or seeking admission to, the university's postgraduate chemistry programs.

Interested candidates should submit their application on the prescribed form for research scholars (available for download as "Research-Scholar-Form.doc" from the University of the Punjab careers page) together with a CV, attested copies of certificates, testimonials, CNIC, domicile, and a recent photograph, so that it reaches the Office of the School of Chemistry by 15-09-2026 at 4:00 pm. Applications received after this deadline, or submitted without the complete set of supporting documents, are unlikely to be considered, so candidates are advised to assemble their paperwork well ahead of the closing date. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview, and no separate application fee is mentioned in the notice. For project-related queries, applicants may contact Prof. Dr. Ahsan Sharif (Principal Investigator) at ch.ahsan.chem@pu.edu.pk, or the project's Co-Principal Investigators, Dr. Zahoor Hussain Farooqi (zahoor.chem@pu.edu.pk) and Dr. Robina Begum (robina.chem@pu.edu.pk), at the School of Chemistry, University of the Punjab, Lahore. This studentship offers an early-career researcher a structured route into HEC-funded project work while completing a postgraduate degree in Chemistry.
