Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab

About This Job
The Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Campus, Lahore, is inviting applications for one MS Studentship position under a University Development Research Grant (UDRG)-funded project titled "Isolation and Characterization of Novel Bioactive Compounds from Selected Medicinal Plants for Evaluation of their Antidiabetic, Anticancer, and Hepatoprotective Pharmaceutical Potential: A Cost-Effective Approach for the Nutra-Pharmaceutical Industry." The position is offered on a purely contract basis to Pakistani nationals for the duration of the research grant, and the selected student will work alongside the project's research team on extracting and evaluating bioactive compounds from medicinal plants for their pharmaceutical potential, contributing directly to a locally-relevant, cost-effective approach aimed at Pakistan's nutra-pharmaceutical industry. The role carries a consolidated monthly stipend of PKR 20,000 and is intended for a student who is concurrently enrolled in a postgraduate degree program at the university, giving the selected candidate the opportunity to combine formal coursework with hands-on laboratory research experience under an active, funded research grant.
Applicants must have completed a BS degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field with good academic grades, and must be currently enrolled as an MA or M.Phil student to be eligible; the studentship is therefore aimed specifically at early-stage postgraduate researchers rather than fresh BS graduates without further enrollment. Preference will be given to candidates who already have some hands-on exposure to medicinal-plant research, including bioactive compound extraction and characterization, phytochemical screening, or antidiabetic, anticancer, antioxidant, or hepatoprotective assay techniques, since the project's day-to-day laboratory work draws directly on these skills. Both male and female students are encouraged to apply, and the notice does not impose any domicile restriction; candidates who are already government employees are asked to route their applications through the proper departmental channel, consistent with standard University of the Punjab practice for research-project hiring of this kind. No specific numeric age limit is stated in the notice, and the University's general terms and conditions for research-grant hiring of this nature apply throughout the selection process.
Interested and eligible candidates should submit their applications, together with all relevant supporting documents, to the undersigned project office - Prof. Dr. Tahir Mehmood, Project Leader, Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Campus, Lahore - on or before the closing date of 7 September 2026; applications must be submitted within the due date to be considered, and late submissions are not expected to be entertained. No online application portal is provided for this particular project hire, so candidates should apply directly to the project office by post or in person rather than through the university's general web-based recruitment system used for other categories of vacancies. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview, and no TA/DA will be admissible for attending it, consistent with the University of the Punjab's standard practice for research-project recruitment. Candidates with questions about the position, the underlying research project, or the required application documents may contact Prof. Dr. Tahir Mehmood directly at 0335-6104834 or by email at Tahir.mmg@pu.edu.pk before the closing date.
