PhD Studentship - Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (PU)
Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab
Apply before 7 September 2026. Full application steps and eligibility criteria are below.
About This Job
The Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Campus, Lahore, is inviting applications for one PhD Studentship position under a Technology Development Fund (TDF)-funded project run through HEC Research Project No. TDF04-303, titled "Designing lignocellulose-derived enzyme cocktail as a robust biocatalytic system for detergent applications." The position is offered on a purely contract basis to Pakistani nationals for the duration of the research grant, and the selected candidate will support the project's work on enzyme-based biocatalytic systems intended for detergent-industry applications, contributing to translational research that connects laboratory enzyme engineering with a practical industrial end-use. The role carries a consolidated monthly stipend of PKR 80,000, reflecting the advanced, PhD-level nature of the research contribution expected and the seniority of the studentship compared with the Institute's other, MS-level research openings.
Applicants must have completed an MS or M.Phil degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or another relevant field with good academic grades, and must be currently enrolled as a PhD student to be eligible; the studentship is therefore reserved for candidates already admitted to doctoral study rather than those only planning to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who already have related hands-on experience in enzyme production, purification and characterization, enzyme assays, fermentation, or enzyme immobilization techniques, since these are the core laboratory skills the project's day-to-day work depends on. Both male and female students are encouraged to apply, the notice does not impose any domicile restriction, and government employees are asked to apply through the proper departmental channel, consistent with standard University of the Punjab practice for research-project hiring of this kind. No specific numeric age limit is stated in the notice, and the University's general terms and conditions for research-grant hiring of this nature apply throughout the selection process.
Interested and eligible candidates should submit their applications, together with all relevant supporting documents, to the undersigned project office - Prof. Dr. Tahir Mehmood, Project Leader, Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Campus, Lahore - on or before the closing date of 7 September 2026; applications must be submitted within the due date to be considered, and late submissions are not expected to be entertained. No online application portal is provided for this particular project hire, so candidates should apply directly to the project office by post or in person rather than through the university's general web-based recruitment system used for other categories of vacancies. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview, and no TA/DA will be admissible for attending it, consistent with the University of the Punjab's standard practice for research-project recruitment. Candidates with questions about the position, the underlying research project, or the required application documents may contact Prof. Dr. Tahir Mehmood directly at 0335-6104834 or by email at Tahir.mmg@pu.edu.pk before the closing date.
